The questions asked in a psychological assessment depend of what kind of assessment or the reason for the assessment. For examples...

  • Participants who volunteer to engage inpsychologicaltesting or questionnaires for the sole purpose of benefiting research receive assessments geared toward a particular topic or topic.
  • Court-orderedpsychologicaltesting for divorce or custody usually assesses whether one--or which one of both--parents should receive custody.
  • Persons who bring themselves to ("present to") apsychologicalclinic, hospital, or medical doctor for evaluation receivepsychologicalassessments that are specific to what bothers that person. As examples, a person complaining of depression or suicidal thoughts may answer "Self Inventories" that give indicators for a diagnosis. A person admitted to apsychologicalward may receive in depth testing.
  • In the US, persons who apply for Social Security Disability and claim apsychologicalcause for a disability are sent forpsychologicaltesting.

Generally speaking, psychological testing and interview questions MAY center on areas like:

  • demographic info - name, age, social security number, items used for billing purposes
  • family info - who is in the family of birth and current family; family deaths; divorce; family relationships and estrangement (e.g. who you are upset with)
  • current "psychological" "problem" -- a self description of "the problem"; interview questions; when it occurs; how it occurs; how severely it occurs; how it affects daily life
  • currentpsychological"resources" -- whatpsychologicalinsight does the person have about the problem; what ways does this person cope with "the problem"; what skills does a person have to cope with this problem; does the person need outside assistance; does the person needpsychologicalsupport/counseling; does the person need medication support for the problem
  • How the problem might affect the immediate future or long term future. What does the person need to be functioning.
  • In assessment only, the only goal is to determine IF there is "a problem" and whether the problem is long term. No support//treatment is given, though apsychologicalreport might recommend treatment.
