In the United States there is no degree or certification needed for the medical billing field although that may change in the future once the governing bodies get a firm grip on the coding industry.

There is nothing that says to be a medical coder that you have to earn a degree or become certified in the profession. However, if this field is what you are going to basing your career on then you should become certified through either AHIMA or the AAPC. This will show that you are a very competent coder, that you are aware of and are on top of all the current coding changes and that you are dedicated to the profession which all leads to more money in your pocket when you are looking for employment.

Also gaining certificates of completion or certifications in HIPAA, Workman's Compensation, etc. will greatly increase your earning potential as a coder because it shows that you go above and beyond what most people in the industry know.

Hospitals usually require certification such as the CPC. However, doctor's offices will hire without certification. It alls starts with quality education.

There is a link within the article on coders that describes sources of training and financial aid.

The good news for those interested individuals is that they wouldn't have to search for far away schools or universities offering courses for medical billing and coding as there are now tons of online providers giving accredited and approved courses.

The job outook for both field is looking nice actually. The Governments occupational outlook handbook suggests the demand for workers in this industry is going to have more demand for the next decade.

You can go to an online school, or a certificate program at a community college. You can also get a 2 year Associate degree in health information management. You can also choose to get the training you need at the comfort of your home as there are now tons of providers of these courses - you just have to check whether your state board has approved and accredited those providers and their courses.

Answer:

You have a couple of options as far as education for a medical billing and coding career is concerned. You can either look for an Associate's degree at a community college or join an online medical coding and billing training program. Some people choose the latter because it allows them to complete the coursework from anywhere, at any time, and at their own pace.

Online courses may or may not be more affordable than college degrees.
