They're used to make the troops march at a certain speed. Every time the drummer played a certain way, you're supposed to step with your left foot.

To increase Morale in the army, by playing Music native to that country. Also to intimidate the Enemy Army.

yes they are. what the drummer does he plays a single snare and another drumer could have a big base drum hanging from his shoulders whitch keeps them in beat and time.
