Earthquakes cause a bunch of stuff. Earthquakes can cause cracks in the road, buildings to topple over, and power lines to cause fires. Plus, there is a bunch more damage such as tsunamis and other smaller earthquakes.
Sometimes it is nothing worse than a few pictures shaken off the walls. In a major quake, buildings and bridges collapse, landslides and rockslides occur, cracks open in the ground, utility poles fall cutting off electrical and telephone service, gas lines burst starting major fires, and water lines rupture.

it causes very dangerous damage, like house faliing down, and killing people.
Earthquakes can cause:

  • Tsunamis - series of huge waves caused by an earthquake under the sea
  • Seiche - a big wave generated by an earthquake in an enclosed body of water like a lake or pond
  • Fault - a section of the earth's crust that was displaced horizontally or vertically due to strong earthquakes that cause change in the earth's surface
  • Landslides - rocks that roll downhill when dislodged or changed in position caused by earthquakes affecting hilly or mountainous areas
  • Sand Blows - sand that was forced out and deposited out on the ground in the form of volcano-like mounds in a place where earthquakes occur where there is much ground water and when water is forced out of the ground in the form of an earthquake fountain
  • Fire - caused when electric wires are destroyed and electric posts are upturned

Earthquakes cause damage to buildings because of the shaking ground. They also can cause avalanches, mudslides, and landslides. Flooding can be caused an earthquake breaking dams or levees. Broken power lines and gas lines can cause fires.

it would depend on what a city/town is built on (loose sediments=more damage, solid bedrock=less damage), and also, how good of a job people did in constructing the city. I.E. the Haiti earthquake of 2010 and the San Francisco earthquake of '89 were of similar magnitudes, but because SF was constructed carefully and well, it sustained less damege than the poor country of haiti. I hope i answered your question, if not, dont hate.
