I just did a little research on this, due to finding one on my front step this morning. The brown beetle with white stripes that I saw, seems to be a Ten-lined June Beetle. No clue as to if it is the same as the one you saw, but it could be.
If the stripes run from side to side rather than head to tail and it has very long antennae, it sounds like an alder beetle.
