Scotland, the northernmost part of the British Isles, had historically been a separate kingdom from England although there had been intermarriages between the royal (and other)families. Edward I had been at war with the Scots and a settlement had been reached whereby English nobles, including a nephew of King Edward, were in power in Scotland. In 1306 there was a "rebellion" aimed at placing Robert The Bruce (a Scot) on the Scottish Throne. Edward travelled to Scotland with an army intending to fight the rebels. He and his forces stopped off at Burgh by Sands (pronounced Bruff by Sands) which was, and still is, a small village near Carlisle, close to the border with Scotland. Edward had been ill for some months and was not really fit to travel. On 7th July 1307 servants came to lift him from his bed in order to eat and he died in their arms, probably from dysentery. His body was laid out in St. Michael's Church in Burgh and was taken to London where he was buried in Westminster Abbey in a plain black marble tomb. The tomb was later painted with the Latin words "scottorum malleus", translated as "Hammer of the Scots." Near to Brugh by Sands is a place called Reedy Burgh Marsh, where a memorial to Edward was erected in 1803, replacing an earlier one erected in 1685.

Nothing killed Edward. However, Carlisle did put venom into Edward when he was biting him. Otherwise, if Carlisle hadn't, Edward would have died, like his mother, from the Spanish Influenza. His mother, Elizabeth Masen, begged Carlisle to save Edward.

Edward III died of a stroke at Sheen on the 21st of June 1377. He had fallen ill with a large abscess in September 1376 but was seemingly recovering around February 1377 but this may have been a contributing factor in his death. He was succeeded by Richard II who was his 10 yr old grandson as his son The Black Prince had pre-deceased him.
