Joseph Smith, Jr. lived with his family on his farm, and spent much of his childhood and teen years participating in farm life - planting crops, taking care of animals, and maintaining the property. In his later teens and early twenties, he got jobs outside of his family farm in order to help his family financially. These jobs included working as a farm hand and working as a commissioned 'treasure digger' for a man convinced there was gold and treasure buried in New England. Later in life, after he was married and had organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he operated a mercantile store and a hotel, although most of his goods and services were donated.
Joseph Smith did pretty much whatever he could to earn money. As a young man he worked as a farm hand and as a 'money digger' or treasure hunter. After being married he mostly worked as a farmer, store keeper and banker.
The Smith family moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1811.
