When You Turn 14 . . .

You can work in an: office, grocery store, retail store, restaurant, movie theater, Baseball park, amusement park, or gasoline service station. (If the company is willing to hire you.)

You generally may not work in: communications or public utilities jobs, construction or repair jobs, driving a motor vehicle or helping a driver, manufacturing and mining occupations, power-driven machinery or hoisting apparatus other than typical office machines, processing occupations, public messenger jobs, transporting of persons or property, workrooms where products are manufactured, mined or processed, or warehousing and storage.

In addition, you may not work any other job or occupation declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor.

Different rules apply to farms, and individual States may have stricter rules.

MINORS AT WORK:

It is hard to find a job as a minor as there are more experienced older workers competing with you. You must be forward and act as an adult would. Some states allow employers to pay minors under 16 lower then minimum wage witch can be a bargaining chip with some employers.

Try looking at a horse farm. They need help cleaning stalls, grooming the horses, feeding, turning them out to the pens/ fields etc. You may need to get authorization to work but this is one job if you are comfortable around horses you can find work. You may need to directly contact the horse farm.

It's really difficult to get a decent job in Atlanta. Chic-Fil-A definitely does. Some grocery stores such as Krogers and Publix do as well. But the only job you can get are ones such as baggers or table busser.

The only way for you to get a job as a 14 year old is to go to your school and get a work permit, and take it to the employer. Both the school and the employer will have to fill out the sheet and return it to the state. Even with a work permit, your hours are limited, and you may not get as high of pay. But here's to trying.

If you want to work in a store, it depends on the state laws. In Idaho, I know, 14 year olds can work in many place which aren't considered a hazard. This is like mining. If you have Sonic in your town, you can work as a waiter.
