Tools, of one kind or another. All over the world from the earliest people of Neolithic times, humanity has utilised tools in order to survive, right down to simple rocks and stones for throwing as weapons or for hunting, and sticks for knocking fruit down from trees and to gauge the depth of watercourses to see if it was safe to cross, and later on as a source of fuel once fire had been discovered as an important source of energy. Even chimpanzees, our closest relatives on the primate chain, have been seen using stones to crack nuts open, to throw at each other, and also as toys. The use of tools pre-dates even the development of language, and are the earliest thing that all of humanity has in common. Anthropologists have put forward a theory within the past 12 years or so that Neanderthals were not the ancestors of the Cro-Magnon species (which is essentially humans as we know them), but a separate offshoot of the human evolutionary tree, and that the two actually co-existed along side each other until the Cro-Magnons drove the Neanderthals to extinction- but even Neanderthals are known to have used tools as well.
