I just had mine put back in by a gun smith. It's hard to explain but I'll give it a try. The back part of the bolt that extrudes, has to be turned in order for the bolt to go back in.

The size of the loading port has no bearing on the question of whether the rifle will fire magnum cartridges. The dimensions of the chamber the round is placed in for the purpose of firing is the critical issue. A 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire cartridge is too long to seat properly in a .22 Long Rifle chamber. The bolt would not close on the round, and no properly constructed rifle will permit the release of the firing pin if the bolt is not locked in the proper position to support the cartridge case head. I seem to recall that the .22 Magnum case is also slightly larger in diameter than the .22 LR, although the difference is too small to notice with the naked eye.
This bolt is the same one used in the Winchester model 57, 69 and 75 rifles.
the rim bolt pattern for all 05 magnums and up are 5X115
