Uric acid (or urate) is an organic compound of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen with the formula C5H4N4O3. it is a compound that can be found in the blood and is eliminated from the body by the kidney's with urine. or in birds feaces.

Increased uric acid in the blood is often the earliest laboratory finding related to gout. Uric acid is a waste product formed from the breakdown of some foods that are rich in purines and the breakdown of cells in the body. It is normally filtered from the blood by the kidneys.

Gout is a metabolic disorder that is the result too much uric acid in the blood, it forms needle like crystals that find their way into the cartilage of the joints, usually in the extremity's of the body. This causes inflammation and excruciating pain and usually start in the big toe. People that suffer from this disease should avoid foods that are high in purines and diuretics. There are many websites available that set out a "diet for gout sufferers".
