It seems to me that it is a reference to a bye-gone era when printing presses used by newspapers and such were operated by manually laying the letters out before the printing began. I think the same term applies today to preparing a text for printing using a computer. The term as used today refers to the preparation of text and includes making informed choices of typeface, point size and leading to enhance the readability and message.
In typesetting the space between lines is called lead or leading. The space between letters is keening.
In typesetting justify is used in connection with left, right and force. In a left justified paragraph each line of text is aligned on the left margin. Right justify has text aligned along the right margin. Force justify creates a paragraph aligned on both the left and right margins.
Wireless Telegraphy (Code form) and The Monotype machine were patented in the Year l897, when she was born. The Monotype is a typesetting machine no longer used but having the same basic keyboard as a typewriter(or modern computer) They normally had two keyboards in paralell(one in reserve) and the whoole complex weighed 2500 Lbs, as much as a Jeep. The Oldsmobile Curved Dash model was inthe design stages in l897. also.
1965, the year Dr. Rudolf Hell introduced the Digiset phototypesetter. This machine, and the more-popular Linotype Linotron 505, worked by putting individual, digitized characters on the screen of a cathode ray tube. The light from the tube was focused by a lens onto photographic paper. Story from the very old days: Frank Romano, who is one of the giants of this industry, bought a Linotron 505 to use in his company. Linotype was not shy about pricing their parts, and Romano decided to find out what was in the machine. He removed the case...to discover that about 90 percent of the parts in a Linotron 505 were available at Radio Shack. So...he wrote an article in TypeWorld listing the Radio Shack parts in his machine. Linotype sued him for copyright infringement. They lost. Romano then sued Linotype for a lot of things, and won. He built an addition onto his home with the proceeds from the settlement and named it the "Linotype Wing."
A layout is an orderly arrangement of the elements making up a message. This includes visuals, headlines, subheads, body copy, captions, trademarks, slogans, signatures, etc. The designer brings coherence to the visual message and use style to help create meaning. By arranging the elements creatively and relating elements to one another in size and proportion, the designer will enhance the message. The design principles of balance, proportion, and movement are guides for uniting images, type, colors, and qualities of the medium into a single piece of communication. A layout can also serve as a blueprint for producion. It will show the size and placement of each element, tells the copywriter how much copy to write, suggests the size and style of the image to the illustrator or photographer, and helps the art director specify the type. And, once the production manager knows the dimensions of the piece, the number of photos, the amount of typesetting, and the use of art elements such as color and illustrations, they can accurately determine the cost of producing it. To the audience, the layout provides all the information about the product or service being sold, or the message intended to send to an audience, in an eye-catching way.
