Best Answer

Neutrons...

  • Are composed of two down quarks and one up quark
  • Have a net charge of zero
  • Have a mass of about 1.674927 x 10-27 kg
  • Have a mass of about 1.008665 that of a proton
  • Have a half-life of about 886 s in isolation
  • Are generally found within the nucleus of various isotopes
  • Can be used to initiate fission, under certain circumstances, of fertile material
  • Can be a result of fission of fissile material
  • Can be changed into a proton (one down quark and two up quarks) during beta- decay

  • Neutrons have a neutral (zero) electric charge.
  • Neutrons are slightly heaver than protons, with a mass of 1.674927 x 10-27 kg.
  • Neutrons are each made up of two down quarks and an up quark.
  • Neutrons, in the particle world, are classified as baryons, which is a hadron that is more massive than a proton. (A hadron is a particle that can experience the strong force. The strong force is the force that holds the nucleus of an atom together.)
  • A neutron on its own will last for about 14.5 minutes (this varies), and then decay into (almost always) a proton, electron, and electron anti-neutrino. There is a small (about 4 in a million) chance that this decay will result in a hydrogen atom.
  • There are "stars" (really the collapse of a big star) called neutron stars that are made up only of neutrons. They are about 20 km (12.5 mi) across and have a mass of about 1.4 times that of the sun. On Earth, a teaspoon of neutron star would weight about one billion pounds.

Study Island -The neutrons do not affect how the atom interacts with other atoms, but they do have an effect on the mass and stability of the nucleus
