Meanwhile, the Cornelii were traveling through Appian Way. Cornelius, because he wanted to arrive at the city in three days, was ordering Syrus to urge on the horses again and again. Therefore, Syrus was beating the horses with a stick. While they were going through the road, Aurelia and Cornelia were watching the peasants who were working in the fields. Marcus and Sextus were watching all the carriages that were going through Appian Way. It was the seventh hour. The day was hot. The peasants now weren't working in the fields, but were resting under trees. In the carriage, Cornelius and Aurelia were now sleeping. Marcus was annoying Cornelia, who wanted to sleep, with his foot. Sextus was sitting with the coachman Syrus; he was watching the vehicles and the road.

Suddenly, Sextus yells," Look, Marcus! It's a charioteer!" Marcus responds with great laughter,"It's not a charioteer, stupid! It's a courier who carries distinguished citizen's letters from the city. Couriers always travel fast because they carry letters from the city to all parts of Italy." "How fast it was traveling!" shouts Sextus."He urges on the horses ferociously with a stick. Watch out for the courier, Syrus! Hold the horses! Watch out for the ditch! Watch out for the ditch!" Syrus holds the horses and avoids the courier, but the carriage goes down into a ditch with a loud crash.

Everyone entered the inn.

"Do you want to eat?, "says the innkeeper. "My slaves are able to immediately prepare a good dinner for you.

"Cornelia and I can not eat here," says Aurelia. " Lead us immediately to our room."

The innkeeper immediately ordered the slaves to prepare the food Sextus and Marcus and Cornelius ordered. He led Cornelia and Aurelia to the room, himself. Aurelia, when she saw one of two beds, groaned.

"This is a dirty bed," she said." Neither I nor my Cornelia are able to sleep in this bed. It is necessary to move another bed into the room. "

the innkeeper responds, "why blame me? Many travelers often stay at my inn. No one blames my inn."

Now Eucleides comes in. When Aurelia explains the situation, Eucleides also blames the innkeeper.

The innkeeper mutters, "Near the Appian Way you are not able to find a better inn. In my inn no beds are dirty."

But he ordered the servants to find another bed. Soon the slaves carried another bed into the room. The innkeeper shouted with laughter, "Look, mistress! My slaves prepared another bed for you. Surely you want to eat now?"

"I am not hungry," says Cornelia. "I want to go to bed."

"Me as well," said Aurelia, "I am very tired."

Aurelia and Cornelia didn't eat dinner, but immediately went to bed. Aurelia soon was sleeping but Cornelia was staying awake

It was now day. At first light the carriage driver helped the slaves of the innkeeper drag the carriage out from the ditch and move it towards the inn. Then the slaves dragged the chests of the Corneliī to the coachman. Meanwhile, in the inn, while all were preparing themselves, Sextus, now forgetful of the terror happening during the night, told the soldier's story to Cornelia. Eucleides was telling the slaves an order. Cornelius himself was shouting at Aurelia and the children, "Come on, all! Do not stop! It is time to go!"

At last they all came from the inn and they climbed into the carriage.

"Goodbye!" shouted the boys.

"Goodbye!" responded the innkeeper, who was standing in the road. "Do not fall into another ditch on the journey! You all are not able to sleep in better inns."

Then the carriage driver grabbed hold of the reins and spurred on the horses. At last they were able to journey to Rome.

On the journey Sextus explained to everyone of Marcus's dead mouse; Cornelius told the soldier's story to his wife. Now they were approaching the city, when suddenly the boys caught sight of a huge building.

Marcus asked father, "What is that?

And Sextus, "Who lives in that building?"

Cornelius responded to him with a laugh, "No one lives in that building. It is the tomb of Messalae Corvini, who was a distinguished orator. That is a tomb of many and distinguished citizens because they are Roman it is not allowed to have a tomb of the city."

"Is it therefore a tomb, father?" asked Marcus.

"Yes!" responds Cornelius. "It is a tomb of Caecilla Metella. Have you not heard of Caecilla Metella?"

But Marcus did not answer his father. Now they were able to see the city. "Look, Rome!" he shouted.

"Look, Rome! Look, Rome!" shouted Sextus and Cornelia.

Then Cornelius said,"On a short tim we will go towards the Porta Capena and we will see your uncle Titus. For he explained letters through his slave and all. Titus will soon welcome us near the Porta.

It is not yet light, but Cornelia gets up and walks through the country house. Mother and father and Marcus are still sleeping. Even Sextus is sleeping and not annoying Cornelia. The slaves and slave-women are however not sleeping. They all now get up because they fear Cornelius and Aurelia.

Cornelia watches a slave-woman named Syra, who cleans the country house, and another, named Thressa, who is preparing to cook food. Many slaves are presently running in the fields where they work hard. They carry water from the river into the country house.

Now Cornelius and Aurelia get up. Cornelius seeks Davus who is in the garden. Cornelius is suddenly angry. He scolds Davus because he is sitting under a tree and not working. Davus, when he hears Cornelius, immediately rises and prepares to work.

Aurelia teaches Cornelia to run the country house. Slave-women clean the country house, they cook food, they spin wool. Aurelia scolds slave-women who are lazy. Cornelia watches her mother and she tries do do everything that her mother does. She wants to help her mother, but she herself scolds neither the slaves nor slave-women. The slaves and slave-women are now working hard. It is neccessary to scold neither the slaves nor the slave-women.

The carriage is still stuck in the ditch. The Cornelius', were going to the inn by the way, which is not far away. Cornelia, who was no longer crying, walked with Eucleide. The boys, who had run ahead, called Cornelius again and again. Aurelia, though she still did not want to spend the night in the tavern, went slowly, with Cornelius.

Soon they came closer to the inn. Nobody saw, however, they heard the voices of men.

Suddenly two dogs barking furiously came out of the door, and the Cornelius' hurl themselves into the inn. Sextus immediately fled. Marcus did not move. Aurelia exclaimed in alarm. Cornelius, he does nothing. Cornelia, however, does not escape the dogs, but she stretches out her hand.

"Look, Marce!" he says. "These dogs only bark. They are not dangerous. Look, Sexte! Their tails are moving."

At the very time at the door to the inn appeared a fat man, who brought back the dogs.

"Hello, guests!" he says. "Do you wish to stay the night in my inn? Many distinguished citizens have stayed here. Once ambassadors even spent the night here."

"Hello, my Apollodore!" interrupted Eucleides. "How are you?"

"By Hercules!" responds the innkeeper. "Unless I am mistaken, I recognize my friend Eucleides."

"No, you are wrong," said Eucleidus, "Happy to see you. The carriage of my master, hangs motionless in a ditch, it is necessary spend the night here, in the inn."

"That is sad," said the innkeeper, " that the carriage is in a ditch, but I am glad that now you come to my the inn. Come, come all! "

It was the eleventh hour. The carriage was still laying in the ditch because the coachman could not move it. Aurelia was anxious; Cornelia was crying; even the boys were afraid of the dangers; Cornelius stood in the road anxious looking at the sky because it was growing dark. Finally Eucleides, “do you see the building?” he says. I see, responds Cornelius. “What is it?” “It is an Inn. Shall we spend the night there, sir?” Aurelia exclaims, “oh poor me! I do not like Inns. Often, there are big dangers there. Perhaps the innkeeper has other horses. Maybe the innkeepers horses can pull the carriage out of the ditch. I will spend the night at an Inn. “Why do you fear, my mistress?” Eucleides asks. There is no risk. Not all Inns are dangerous. Not all Innkeepers are wicked. The Innkeeper is my friend. Greek is a good man.”
