Luce is the main protagonist of the novel. She started seeing 'Shadows' at a young age. As a child, she tells her parents about her increasing "ability", troubling them, taking her to many psychiatrists and psychologists who put her on anti-psychotics. Years later, when she is off the pills and is attempting to embark on having a 'normal' life, she is invited to a beach party where her boyfriend, Trevor was caught by fire while she kisses him. Then Trevor dies, causing Luce to be transferred into a reform school called "Sword and Cross" which contains some very strange closed. She is befriended almost immediately by Arianne, another strange student studying there. She is also inexplicably drawn to Daniel Grigori, whom she believes that she recognizes from somewhere. She has black hair and hazel eyes.
Daniel is a fallen angel and Luce's main love interest. He is described as a handsome blond, with gray-violet eyes. He saves Luce from a falling statue of an Angel. He tries to show disinterest in Luce, ignoring her for her own "safety". He is very secluded and secretive with Luce during Torment.
Cam is the antagonist of the story and Luce's other love interest. He is also a fallen angel. Cam is tall, has a pale complexion, and has black hair and green eyes. He also has a tattoo of a sunburst on the back of his neck. He continuously tries to show Luce his love for her, even going to great lengths to secure her safety on numerous occasions. He appears to be against Daniel after a few complications in the novel.
Arriane is a fallen angel like Cam and Daniel. She befriends Luce within Luce's first day at Sword and Cross, even defending her from Molly Zane, who throws meat-loaf at Luce on her first day. This activates the strange bracelet that she wears, administrating an electric shock. She is a brunette like Luce (She makes Luce cut it off so it'll look identical to Luce's).She is considered a psychopath and is possibly infatuated with Roland.
One of Luce's friends. She is the adopted daughter of the headmaster and has brown hair and purple glasses. Penn's father used to be the grounds-keeper, but he died and was buried in the school's cemetery. She is injured while she and a small party are fleeing the battle, and later killed by Miss Sophia. Her name for 'Sword and Cross' is 'Whores and Jocks'.
Gabbe is also a fallen angel at the school. She is described as blonde and has a southern accent and has a "neutrogena type of beauty," according to Luce, who thinks that Gabbe is Daniel's love interest for most of the novel.
Roland, like the others, is a fallen angel. He is Daniel's friend at the school and has dreadlocks. He's also on Cam's side, which surprises Luce at first as he gets on well with everyone at Sword and Cross Reform School, including the other fallen angels. He is able to smuggle anything into "Sword and Cross"
Molly is another fallen angel who stayed mostly on Cam's side. She has bleached hair and piercings all over her face. She is very aggressive and is mean to Luce. She tries to creep her out and belittle her at every turn.
Miss Sophia is the school's librarian. She appears to like Luce and Penn because of their educational status and their interest in the library. She teaches the students' religion and has a very strong belief on the subject. It is later discovered that she is in fact one of the 24 elders, after she kills Penn and attempts to kill Luce. She is an elderly lady with black eyes and silver hair.
Randy is an attendant at Sword & Cross. She is described as being very masculine - even confusing Luce as to which gender she was.
Callie is the best friend of Luce back in Dover Prep School. She is the typical best friend type who is obsessed with boys, love and Gossip
Todd is one of the three other people that entered Sword and Cross at the same time that Luce did. He has brown hair, brown eyes and a spattering of freckles over his nose. He died of a broken neck helping Luce out of a burning building.
Trevor is the boy that Luce had kissed. While they were alone shadows started to circle above them, as soon as they kissed flames erupted and caused the death of Trevor. Luce survived but was blamed and therefore sent to Sword and Cross.

The theme of Fallen by Lauren Kate is that love lasts forever.
coming of age
There are twenty chapters not including the epilogue at the end of the book.
one theme is discovery. in this book, the main character discovers a new species of animal with the help of his new more then friend, kate de vries. they use her grandfathers sketch book that was found in his hot air balloon when matt cruse found him. One of the many themes in Airborne is that you shouldn't assume something is real. One example in the book is when Matt Cruse receives the journal of the Endurance from Kate and thinks how impossible it is to make such a creature out of your mind.
Well in the book Luce says"their house in Thunderbolt was less than a half hour from Sword&Cross". And Thunderbolt is in Savannah,Georgia But if im correct Sword&Cross isnt in existance so its around the thunderbolt area near water , because she does mention that when her and Daniel are at the lake that," when she stood on her toes, she could see beginnings of a tawny-colored salt marsh, one she knew gave way to the white foam of the ocean somewhere on the invisible horizon."
