"Lord of the Flies"
In Chapter 4 of "Lord of the Flies," the boys have difficulty maintaining the signal fire, symbolizing their waning connection to civilization. The hunters, led by Jack, prioritize hunting over rescue, symbolizing their descent into savagery. Simon's actions of caring for the littluns and finding a secluded spot in the forest symbolize his humane nature and connection with the natural world.
The main use of symbolism in Lord of the Flies is on characters and objects. For example, the characters of Ralph, Jack, Piggy and Simon are all representatives of a theme/personality trait. Ralph, is a symbol of good of mankind, Jack, is a symbol of the evil of mankind, Piggy, is a symbol of intelligence and the innocence of man, and Simon, is a symbol of the truth.
The objects that hold symbolism may include, but are not limited to: The conch - law & order, Piggy's glasses - intelligence, (keeping in mind these glasses are the vital ingredient to start fires on the island, to be rescued). The parachutist - this could be a symbol that bad things are happening outside the island of where the boys are at, for example, the war. Also the parachutist was the "beastie" that the littl-uns were afraid of. Because the parachutist obviously had a tragic death, it symbolizes the fear that the boys feel while on the island.
Hope all this helps :)

"Lord of the Flies"
The whole of Lord of the Flies is riddled with symbols. Many of the chapter titles symbolise incidents from World War II. The boys themselves are symbols, for example Piggy represents logic, common sense and a scientific approach to problems. Objects are also used as symbols. Piggy's glasses symbolise technology and civilization, they are the means to make fire and the means by which Piggy sees things clearly. The conch symbolises democracy and the rule of law & order.
In Lord of the Flies, the conch, or shell, the Ralph uses to gather the boys for meetings, is symbolic for power or leadership that will hold up the society of the boys. The 'beastie' or Lord of the Flies represents the devil, or rather, the evil and dark characteristics in each every man.
The whole book is symbolic for William Golding attempting to make a point after World War 2, that you can not just blame other nations for the evil in the world, but try and realize that there is evil in every one of us, and that it takes just the right situation to bring it out.

Roger and Maurice had been relieved of the duty of keeping the fire going in Chapter 4 of "Lord of the Flies." They were allowed to join the hunting expedition because they believed the fire would be maintained by the other boys.
