A suite is a collection of pieces published together and often intended by the composer to be performed as one work during recitals or concerts. The pieces are usually united around some kind of theme or musical idea. Many suites, especially those written in past centuries, are made up of pieces written in various dance styles and rhythms. Think of a suite of rooms, several rooms that are accessible to each other and that form a harmonious and functional unit.

Sometimes a composer will collect favorite themes or sections from larger works and present them as suites. Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker is an example. The Nutcracker is a major length Ballet loved by many people around the world. When you hear 'The Nutcracker Suite' on the radio or other media, you are not hearing every note of the ballet as Tchaikovsky wrote it, but a collection of the well known melodies presented together. Another example is the Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg. This is a collection of wonderful works by Grieg, originally meant to be incidental music to a stage play by Ibsen.
