In my case it was the ignition switch itself had overheated and seized up. Replace the switch (have to lower the column, disconnect the wiring plug from the switch, and remove/replace the switch.) Clean all connections to the switch, make sure they're connected solidly and not heating up again.

It sounds like the feed for the kitchen is fed through the bathroom switch box. The black feeding the kitchen light is connected to the wrong side of the switch. There should be two black on one side of the switch and one on the other. Electricity is conducted very easily through water. So if you let water run from your wet hands into a light switch in a bathroom there is a chance you could get a shock, even get killed. So some bathrooms have the switch on the roof with a long string to turn it on and off. So there is no chance of water getting to the switch.
