In simple terms - communication. Nerve cells, or 'neurons' are what process sensory information (like sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, pain, hearing, balance). Neurons are also what generate movement commands for muscles; and large collections of neurons working together are what give rise to consciousness, perception, planning, and execution of behavior.
