It is the force that keepsplanetsorbiting the Sun.It is also the mainforce that holdsa planet together.
Obviously, planets are not just points, but have a size in space. This means that there are small differences in the gravitational force felt at various points on a planet.
In the case of the Earth, our Moon (and to a smaller extent the Sun)causes tides in the oceans, because of this "differential gravity".Sometimesthis type of effect is simplycalled "tidal forces".
