The Atman is basically our soul, and it is immortal. The atman is part of the Brahman, that has 'split' from the Brahman, and has been trapped inside our bodies. It is the main focus of Hinduism to release the Atman back into the Brahman, in a process known as Moksha.

Yes, what Brahman and Atman are is what a wave and ocean are. That is the best way to understand. The wave appears to be different, but it comes from the ocean and it goes back into the ocean. The Atman appears to be different, but it comes from the Brahman and it goes back into the Brahman. We are a particle, we are just an effect, God is the cause. It is as simple as that: we are a part of the supreme Soul, the Divine.

The relationship between Brahman and Atman is the same relationship as between a gold ring and gold. Gold is the essence, the gold ring is the effect; from the gold comes the gold ring, from Brahman comes Atman. Therefore Brahman is the cause, Atman is the effect. The Atman becomes the mind, the body - it manifests because without the body and mind, the Atman cannot manifest. Just like mud needs a pot, or a plate to manifest itself, so Brahman needs the Atman to manifest as the body-mind complex, you and me.
