Like every Christian, a priest is foremost a follower of Jesus Christ, trying to live as Jesus taught us. But a priest has a particular role. Firstly he or she represents the Church to the wider community, reaching out with the good news of God's love in mission and service. Secondly, she or he has a responsibility of being alongside the members of their congregations, helping them to grow in their discipleship through worship, exploring their Christian faith and serving the wider community. Thirdly, the priest is a leader in the Christian community, who is also responsible for encouraging the gifts, skills and ministries of others.

The role of a priest in the Catholic Church is a interpreter of the gospel and a vessel through which Jesus Christ can speak to us on a more physical level. They are the successors of the 12 apostles themselves. They are to be role models on what a true man should be.

AnswerA priest in the Catholic Church takes his role from the the Apostles: "And he (Jesus) went up on the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, to be with him," (Mk Ch 3) "If any one would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all"(Mark Ch 9) "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age."(Matthew Ch 28) "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." (John Ch 20) And when the hour came, he sat at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer; for I tell you I shall not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves; for I tell you that from now on I shall not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." And likewise the cup after supper, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood (Luke Ch 22) These passages of Scripture cover the main elements of a priest's role.
