What is the reason for religion?

A famous catechism begins "What is the chief end of man?" : "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." That's another way of saying, "Why are we here? To glorify God and enjoy him forever."

If a religion achieves that is has succeeded. But, since Jesus Christ is the only person to get a man to God, you must know him to enjoy God forever.

The main reason for religion was based on the need to formalize social behaviors and conduct. It was mainly a way to influence social behaviors through the use of moral suasion. It was designed as a behavioral standard that governed the appropriate conduct of the citizens of that particular region. Religion was developed mainly around social cultures and traditions. In many respects religion was actually the (traditions) lore of the land, which later became the imperial law of the land.

Religion was created as a social compact between man and the universe. They created a God that would bring psychological comfort in times of hardship. They created a God that would protect them from natural disasters, disease and extinction.

Nothing, really. Religions were created in times when people didn't know what caused things, and likewise didn't have the instruments (or minds) to find out. The most well-known case will have to be God: "Who created the world/universe/people/animal etc."

True Christianity is not about religion but relationship. A Christian is a person who has been restored to a right relationship with God. Many of the practices of the common "religions" have no Biblical basis.
