You can take over the counter medication if it works, or may need to receive a stronger prescription of pain killers from your doctor. Antiviral medicines are another treatment option that can reduce the severity and longevity of the virus. Another option that is not as widely used but is available is Corticosteroid injections. These can also manage the pain associated with the shingles virus. Most importantly is how your body reacts to the virus after the rash has disappeared. There are many complications of the shingles virus that you should discuss with your doctor if you are experienceing pain longer than a month.
