Best Answer

If treated early, a person with encephalitis lethargica can be cured. If not treated early, the prognosis is much less favorable due to resulting brain damage. Encephalitis lethargica is fatal if untreated.

How does levadopa work in patients with encephalitis lethargica?

Encephalitis lethargica or von Economo disease is an atypical form of encephalitis. Also known as "sleepysickness" (distinct from tsetse fly-transmitted sleeping sickness), therapies, and treatments to help symptoms were often steroids.Treatment is then based on the systems. Levodopa (L-DOPA) and other anti-Parkinson drugs often produce dramatic responses; however, most patients given L-DOPA experience help that is short lived.L-DOPA crosses the protective blood–brain barrier, whereas dopamine itself cannot. Therefore, L-DOPA is used to increase dopamine concentrations in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and EL.The epidemic of encephalitis lethargica (EL) was widespread throughout the world during 1917–1926, affecting half a million persons. The acute phase was lethal for many. The cause was unknown and many thought that the influenza virus was to blame There was a very lethal 'flu outbreak at this time (Of course, there were zombie theories also). The data now supports the hypothesis that the VLP observed in EL tissue is an Enterovirus.
