Where Elphaba Thropp fits into the scheme of things is the problem in both the book and the stage versions of 'Wicked'. Specifically, Elphaba doesn't fit into society because of her unusual, green tinted skin. Neither does she fit into school because of her compassion for non humans. Nor does she fit into family because of her being the biological result of her mother's extramarital affair with the Wizard of Oz.

The problem is solved, in the book and the play, by Elphaba's removal from the immediate scene. In the original book and the musical, Elphaba appears to die under a steadily fatal stream of water. But in the book and the musical, there's the possibility that she'll come back.

Elphaba's defenses against Glinda,Madame Morrible and the Wizard constitute conflicts in the musical "Wicked."

Specifically, Elphaba's and Glinda's personalities are opposite and therefore tend to clash even though they find common ground for building mutual respect. Elphaba's integrity, compassion and activism for Dr. Dillamond and animal welfare put her at odds with unprincipled Shiz University headmistress Madame Morrible and the brutally corrupt Oz ruler the Wizard. These represent examples of the onstage conflicts, which are preceded by references to Elphaba's defenses against her presumed father Frex and her spoiled younger sister Nessarose.
