if the hydro carbons are in the liquid state then their differential boiling points are used in separation - fractional distillation.example petroleum products.

some hydrocarbons are also separated by their differential solubility in some organic solvents like carbon-di-sulphide CS2

some are separated by their weights in chromatography

some are separated by their charge in electrophoresis

Simply stated: boiling point, though it's better to say: volatility.

Related Information:

Not all substances with different boiling points can be separated by simple distillation. An example is a water/ethanol mixture. The ethanol, in a 50/50 mixture of water and ethanol, can be concentrated by progressive distillations to an azeotropic mixture of 4.37% Water (BP = 100oC) and 95.63% Ethanol (BP = 78.4oC).

This resulting distillate, has a boiling point of 78.2oC. Further distillation does not yield further enrichment. The vapor has the identical composition of the original fluid (also 4.37% and 95.63%).

A classic experiment, to liberate the remaining ethanol from this mixture, involves the use of benzene or cyclohexane to entrain the water while freeing the ethanol, allowing its capture as a distillate.

The property that they will almost certainly have different temperatures at which they will boil. If liquid A has a lower boiling point (T1) than liquid B (T2), then when the solution is heated, both liquids will evaporate. When the temperature reaches T1, it will stop rising while all of liquid A evaporates. Then will the temperature start rising again. Therefore, if you stop heating when the temperature starts rising above T1, the remaining liquid will be pure liquid B.

However, the vapours will contain some evaporated liquid B. If these vapours are allowed to cool, liquid B will condense out first, and then liquid A. The combination of the two boiling and condensation processes will separate the liquids.

This is a nonhomogeneous mixture.

Which would you use to separate a substance from a mixture its chemical or physical properties?

A mixture is a combination of two or more subtances.Subtances in a mixture can be separated. This means that they are chemically combined.I would prefer physical change cause mixtures are made by physically combining two or more subtances. The solids, liquids,or gases in a mixture are not chemically combined. They can be easily seperated.

Is iron fillings and flour a homogeneous mixture?

No, they are in heterogenous form mixed: not as atoms or molecules but only as particles they mix, you can easily separate them by physical methods: a magnet will pick out the iron particles.

How do you use the word mixture in a sentence?

What physical property would be the most useful in the separation of fine saw dust and salt?

Magnetism would be the most useful physical property for separating fine saw dust and salt. However, since neither is magnetic, a process of dissolving the salt in water, filtering out the saw dust, and boiling away the water is necessary.

That is a chemical property. A physical property could be its mass, volume, density, physical state, or that it can tear easily. A physical property is one that does not change the chemical composition of the substance.
