∙ 14y agoIt is when the umbra reaches the surface of the earth. The eclipse will appear to be 'total' only where the umbra passes during the course of the eclipse. The umbra is the shadow cast onto the earth by the moon, wherever the moon covers the face of the sun completely. In other locations where the moon covers only a part of the sun's face, it is the moon's penumbra that passes. Enjoy the eclipse safely. They are amazingly beautiful.

The last total solar eclipse visible as totality, from Connecticut was on January 24th, 1925. Totality covered all of the state, except the very northeast corner. New York City was JUST outside of the path of totality, but if New Yorkers traveled to the Bronx, they caught totality !!
