Waltz is one of the oldest forms of ballroom dances. It has its origins in the German folk dance called 'Lander', this variation called 'Walzer', which was danced in couples, started being popular around 1750 in Bohemia, Austria and Bavaria. By the year 1780, the Waltz was very popular in the Vienna ballrooms.
This name is origin from Germany. It means 'going on one's travels', similar to 'to wander'. Earlier in times when carpenters where not resident in towns, they 'wandered' around and asked people if they'd work for them to do. In German that means 'going on the 'walz''. This has nothing to do with the 'waltz dance'. They were dressed in a very special way, they had like a folklore dress (black pants, black jacket, a white shirt and huge hat) and often they had earrings, one on each side. The jacket was very special so they could carry their tools. There clothes were put in a blanket that was tied on a 'cane' or 'stick'
It partly came from a German dance called the walzen.
late 18th cent.: from German Walzer, from walzen'revolve.'
