Technically the oldest mmorpg are things called MUDs which are basically text based adventures that you play multiplayer. They still exist, such as Discworld MUD and Aardwolf MUD. The interfaces of the programs you use these days are far more advanced than they used to be but it's still the same basic game. It really was just text at the beginning though.
