North American of French descent in the United States of America is the nationality of the person for whom poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) are named.
Specifically, Joel Roberts Poinsett (March 2, 1774 - December 12, 1851) is the individual after whom the Mexican native plant is named. He served as Special Envoy of 1822-1823 and then as first U.S. Minister of 1825-1830 in Mexico. While there he discovered poinsettias and became the first known person to introduce the plant north of the U.S.-Mexico border. It is for that reason that he is honored by seeing his accomplishment memorialized in the plant's most widely known common name.
According to Wikipedia, he was from Hanover, Germany.
