Catholic AnswerMost priests wear a Roman collar around their neck when they are in street clothes. The Roman collar is exactly the same collar that men used to wear when they wore detachable collars, but it is worn backward. In a detachable collar, the collar pin goes through the ends of the collar into the top button hole in the front, in a Roman Collar, that goes in the back.

When a priest is vested for Mass, the rubrics state that if his alb does not completely cover his street clothes, he must wear an amice around his neck. It is a large, rectangle of white linen with large strings on it that wrap all the way around his body and ties in the front.
