Name the three primary pulse points and state their locations on the body?

Pulses can be felt at the following locations:

1. at the neck (carotid artery) - SECOND most common site to check
   
2. on the inside of the elbow(brachial artery) - * UNIQUE USE -most often assessed during taking of a B/P
3. Radial pulse - at the wrist(radial artery) - FIRST and most common site to check, and is also a unique site from the frequency and ease with which it gives a quick assessment of cardiac status
4. at the groin (femoral artery) - LAST - this area is typically of little concern, except when a patient is so critical or near death that the other pulses are absent or difficult to assess. It is often the last pulse checked when a patient has recently died but not in the presence of a medical professional. For example: A patient of 89 yrs is "terminal", only expected to live a few weeks. Nurse in the home cannot feel a radial pulse. She listens for an apical (heart) rate but hears nothing. She assesses for the carotids and femoral pulses (both sides on each) in case the heart rate is just so low or difficult to hear.
5. behind the knee (popliteal artery) - FOURTH most common, especially with prior or current circulation problems
6. near the ankle joint (posterior tibial artery) - - FOURTH most common, especially with prior or current circulation problems, especially if there is no pedal pulse (#7)
7. on foot (dorsalis pedis artery) - THIRD most common place to check especially when a patient is currently having circulatory problems; the goal is to assess circulation, prevent cyanosis and cell-tissue death which usually results in foot/limb amputation.

1. Brachial- On your forearm just below your elbow

2. Radial- On the distal side of your wrist

3. Apical (heart)- The 5th intercostal space down from your clavicle
