find a reputable computer parts store near you, and ask for advice and parts from them. if they don't work on a commision, they should be willing to walk you through the process of buying what you need now while allowing for expansion and upgrades. ----

A barebone computer is basically a case with a motherboard. This is not built but bought as a whole.

If by barebone you mean one with large upgrade potential, choose your motherboard and case carefully. Your motherboard should support recently released hardware. Don't go overboard and get a $300 motherboard. A good motherboard can be as cheap as $50. A good price range is usually around the $150 range.

A good case is also a good investment. You don't want to buy a small case that might not be able to hold some of the larger hardware (For example, some video cards will give everything but a full tower a hard time with installation). Put some extra money into getting a good case. It's probably the last thing in a computer that gets replaced.

If you plan on getting high-end hardware eventually, it's smart to invest in extra cooling. Some extra fans and a better CPU fan will put some extra stabilty for about $50.

The two other important buys are the CPU and the power supply.

The CPU should not be out dated. Be ready to spend around $150 on one, or you'll end up having to replace it again by the time you do a major upgrade.

The power supply will be essential in powering your computer. Too little power will result in hardware running at below-optimal settings. Too much and you're just wasting money with an expensive power supply and power bill. Get about 400-500W for the basics. Bump it up to around 700 when you start running powerful video cards and fans. A high end rig may require a $300 power supply that supplies over 1000W.
