There are a number of answers.
The word comes from the Latin 'millum', meaning one thousand, for one thousand paces (left foot, then right foot then left again). I don't know what the length of a standard Roman pace was, but in the Canadian Air Force (and Cadets), it was 5 feet. The Roman Empire was marked with mile posts for the benefit of their military.
The statute (or English) mile is 5280 feet (1608 metres). This is easier to divide into quarters, thirds and eights than 5000 feet.
The nautical mile is equivalent to one minute of arc at the equator, and is equivalent to 6076.12 feet, or 1852 metres (being hard to pace out a distance on the ocean).
On the Canadian priaires, a prairie mile is the distance to that place you see 'over there', and is anywhere from 3 to 10 statute miles, depending on how clear your view and how flat the terrain between.
