Speaking mathematically, mean is a manner in which one can manipulate numbers for analysis. This is also done with median, mode, and range. The mean is the average of a group of numbers. You can discover it by adding all numbers in a group and dividing by the total count of numbers in the group. for instance:

Your group of numbers might be...

5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 10, 10, 22

These totaled equal 84.

There are nine numbers in the group, and 84/9=9.333 or 9 1/3.

You'll notice that the mean does not appear in the list of numbers. This is not uncommon.

Just for the sake of complete information:

The median is the middle value of the group. You'll have to rewrite the group:

5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 22

There are nine numbers in the list, and the middle one is found with this formula (helpful with much larger lists):

(9 + 1) ÷2 = 10 ÷2

The answer is the fifth number.

5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 22

Eight (8) is the median.

The mode is the number most often repeated. In our list 8 is repeated three times, so 8 is the mode.

The largest value in the list is 22, and the smallest is 5, so the range is 22 - 5 = 17. The range is 17.
