A novella (also called a short novel) is a written, fictional, prose narrative longer than a novelette but shorter than a novel.

A novel is a book-length work of fiction. Just being fictional and bound isn't enough -- collections of short stories, novellas, and other fictional texts can be bound, but they don't thereby become a novel.

A novella is traditionally defined as between 17,500 and 40,000 words. A novel is over 40,000 words.

Both novels and novellas are longer than short stories. A novella is almost like a "mini-book."

Novellas are less than 40,000 words, but more than 17,500 words; novels are more than 40,000 words. So both of them have a good many words!

Short stories are shorter in length usually being 3-5 pages in total or even up to 8. Short stories generally are faster to read through and have a smaller story than a novel would have. Novels can have more than 100 pages and have a longer story than a short story. Short stories are meant to be read in one sitting while novels can take a longer time to read through.

What does novella mean in italian?

Literally translated 'novella' means 'new' but it is also considered a short story or short 'novel' hence the similar sounding word to that of English ('novel') however this word is normally associated with a fairly lengthy story. It can also mean 'tale' in the fictional sense. They are normally written in continuous prose and are around 17,500 and 40,000 words although some are as short as 10,000 words or as many as 70,000. However in Italy there is also a magazine called 'Novella' which appears similar to something like the glossy magazines available elsewhere including the 'short stories' of the week etc; again adding to the idea of short stories. I hope that helps! :0)

What is another name for a short story?

A tale or sketch. Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a book of short stories called "Twice Told Tales." Washington Irving wrote a book of short stories entitled "The Sketch Book." Even Edgar Allen Poe referred to short stories as tales. Later as the form became more popular the term short story was adopted.

What is a brief story?

A short story is a work of prose fiction that is long enough for an average reader to finish it in one sitting rather than several as the longer novel or novella normally takes. This usually means it will be somewhere under 10,000 words. Edgar Allan Poe once described a short story, or 'tales' as they were then, called as a "...short prose narrative, requiring from a half-hour to one or two hours in its perusal . . . During the hour the hour of perusal the soul of the reader is at the writer's control. There are no external or extrinsic influences resulting from weariness or interruption." This was taken from a review Poe had made in 1842 of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Twice Told Tales." This is why it is common to say that a short story should be read in one sitting.
