The basis of the Muslim legal system is given in the holy Qur'an by Almighty God. It is further explained by the Prophet of Islam Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (SAW). Islamic Jurisprudence has been compiled by the Imams of Jurisprudence: Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifa (RA), Hazrat Imam Malik (RA), Hazrat Imam Shafai (RA), Hazrat Imam Ahmad bin Humbal (RA), and Hazrat Imam Ja'afar (RA). It was further modifies during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir. It is further explained through the Ijtihad of the scholars as the need be.

The general term for all of these combined efforts is the "Shari'a" or Proper Path.
