Beginning at the equator, Lake Victoria in east central Africa is the largest lake on the continent. It borders the countries of Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Farther inland to the southwest, Lake Tanganyika is longer, but thinner, forming the border between Tanzania and the landlocked nations of Burundi, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tanzania also has a shoreline on the third large lake, Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi), along with Malawi and Mozambique.
