Original sin comes from the Augustinian tradition that we are all descended from Adam and Eve, and therefore are all guilty of their sin in the garden of Eden.
Original sin means that you are born into sin, hence in the Victorian era it was very common for a child to be baptised as soon as possible to rid them of said sin.
Many people do not accept however, that newborns are inherently evil, and the idea of original sin is widely rejected by many denominations.
