THE VEDAS are the most important and sacred texts for Hindus and Hinduism. The Vedas are the world's most ancient scripture.

The language of the Vedas is Sanskrit, a language that is so holy that the very word Sanskrit means "perfect".

There are four Vedas:

  • The Rig Veda
  • The Sama Veda
  • The Yajur Veda
  • The Atharvana Veda

Each Veda has four layers:

  • Samhithas (a collection of hymns)
  • Brahmanas (directions about sacrifice)
  • Aranyaka (the forest songs)
  • Upanishads (which searches for the meaning behind it all)

For Hindus, the holy book is the Bhagavad Gita, a 700-verse scripture that is part of the Indian epic Mahabharata. For Sikhs, the holy book is the Guru Granth Sahib, which is considered the eternal Guru. For Buddhists, while they do not have a single holy book, the teachings of Buddha can be found in texts such as the Tripitaka.

There is no "holy book" for the American Indian. First of all, there are many different tribes with as many different traditions and beliefs While the majority of American Indians today are Christian, they are able to keep much of their heritage and spiritual beliefs intact too. Since oral history was imperative to most tribes, most of their beliefs have been meticulously handed down by tribal storytellers, medicine and holy people and tribal historians. These histories and stories are as rich and valuable as any other religion's "holy book".

The VedasThere are four Vedas, the Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda. The Vedas are the primary texts of Hinduism. They also had a vast influence on Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Traditionally the text of the Vedas was coeval with the universe. Scholars have determined that the Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas, was composed about 1500 B.C., and codified about 600 B.C. It is unknown when it was finally committed to writing, but this probably was at some point after 300 B.C.

The Vedas contain hymns, incantations, and rituals from ancient India. Along with the Book of the Dead, the Enuma Elish, the I Ching, and the Avesta, they are among the most ancient religious texts still in existence. Besides their spiritual value, they also give a unique view of everyday life in India four thousand years ago. The Vedas are also the most ancient extensive texts in an Indo-European language, and as such are invaluable in the study of comparative linguistics.
