Golgotha, also known as Calvary, is the site where Jesus Christ is believed to have been crucified according to Christian tradition. It is located just outside the walls of ancient Jerusalem. The history of Golgotha dates back to the 1st century AD and has been regarded as a significant religious site for Christians worldwide. Over the centuries, churches and chapels have been built on and around the site to commemorate Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection.

The first time Golgotha is referred to is in Genesis 22. The LORD told Abraham to go to the land of Moriah and sacrifice his son Isaac on the mount that he would show him.

And he said, Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mounts which I will tell you of. Gen 22,2

As Abraham arrived in the land of Moriah, the LORD showed him the exact mount of where he would one day have his son Jesus sacrificed as a burnt offering.

This mount was named by Abraham 'Jhwh Jireh' and is not to be confused with Mount Moriah, which is only 300 meters away, separated by a valley where today the eastern wall of Jersualem separates them. There are two characteristics about this mount which allow us to identify it.

And Abraham called the name of that place JHWH Jireh as it is said to this day, In the mount the LORD is seen. Gen 22,14

First, in this mount the LORD is seen. What is more obvious about this mount than its appearance, which caused the people of old to say of it, 'In the mount the LORD is seen.' In these days, before Israel was made a wilderness because of their sin, it was a very beautiful land and this hill, shaped like the top of a head, was covered by vegitation, as witnessed to by the ram whose horns were caught in the thickets.

The other characteristic is that the LORD personifies himself with this mount, seeing from it. That is what 'Jhwh Jireh' means, 'the LORD sees'. And if the LORD personifies himself with this mount, what is he seeing? He sees from this place the north side of the Altar, where the sacrifices of Israel were made. Did he not see in these sacrifices the death of his son for the forgiveness of sins? How fitting that this place was directly before his sight, as he personified himself with this mount.

And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD : and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall sprinkle his blood round about upon the altar. Lev 1,11

The south or west side of the altar would not have been before him, if he personified himself with this mount of which was said, 'in this mount the LORD is seen'.

The next time Golgotha appears in history occured in the life of David as he numbered Israel. Although the mount is not directly mentioned, the scriptures refer to the angel being stopped before he entered Jerusalem. (2 Sam 24,16) The altar was built in the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. Threshing floors were not placed on the top of the hills, but rather in lower positions to simplify carrying wheat there. It is therefore very likely that the altar which David built, at the threshing floor, was not at the top of Mount Moriah as the alter built by Solomon. And if so, it was in the valley east of Mount Moriah.

As the angel approached Jerusalem on the east side, it would have come by Golgotha on its way. As it passed by Golgotha, the LORD repented of the evil he planned to do concerning the pestilence. Could it be that this also was related to the death of his son which one day would atone for sin?

It was against Jewish custom to crucify people within the city limits. For this reason the Romans, situated just within the eastern Gate of Jerusalem, (at that time the Sheep Gate), used Golgotha as a place to crucify criminals. Even today in this area near the Lion's Gate there are many artifacts testifying that this was the Roman Quarter of the city.

It was because of convenience that they crucified on Golgotha, for it was very near where they were stationed. For that reason we read concerning the death of Jesus, that the Jews went to Pilate complaining about the sign 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews' or how Pilate inquired whether Jesus was already dead and received quickly an answer.

The greatest historical event of all times happened on Golgotha as Jesus was crucified there. Jesus continually fortold his death of being crucified to his disciples. He also fortold that it would happen on the eve of the Passover.

You know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man will be betrayed to be crucified. Matt 26,2

Even his enemies testified to this historical event that happened on the eve of the Passover.

On the eve of the Passover Yeshu (Jesus) was hanged. Babl. Talmud Sanhedrin 43a

What is elevation difference from Pilate's Palace to Golgotha?

Golgotha or Cranium is pretty high. The base of Golgotha is the same height as the Prätorium. But the top of Golgotha, where Jesus and the two criminals were crucified, is about 15 meters higher. The road Via Dolorosa, earlier called Decumanus Maximus, led from the Prätorium to Golgotha, passing by Bethsaide. (John 5) Jesus walked a few hundred meters but after going through the Sheep Gate he was helped by Symon of Cyrene to carry his cross up the steep slope of Golgotha.
