By the early 1960's, the Australian government had decided that Australia would have a decimal currency and that the designs on the coins and notes would reflect Australia.

The Australian 20 cent coin was introduced into the new Australian decimal currency on the 14th of February, 1966 and has remained largely unchanged.

The obverse has featured three different portraits of Queen Elizabeth II -

Second Portrait - designed by Arnold Machin - 1966 to 1984

Third Portrait - designed by Raphael Maklouf - 1985 to 1998

Fourth Portrait - designed by Ian Rank-Broadley - 1999 to present

The reverse has featured a Duck-billed Platypus design by Stuart Devlin since 1966 to present.

Apart from the 1966 and 1981 issues, all Australian 20 cent coins have been minted at the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra.

The Australian 20 cent coin is occasionally used as a commemorative coin.

The coin is made from 75% copper and 25% nickel giving it a silvery appearance, it is 28.52mm in diameter, weighs 11.31 grams and has a milled edge.

There are no general circulation Australian 20 cent coins that could be considered to be rare or valuable.
