The Government of Chile has been historically a presidential representative democratic republic since 1810 (with a break between 1973-1990 during Pinochet military junta), whereby the President of Chile is both head of state and head of government, and of a multiparty system that thru a binomial system permitting two major coalitions in the National Congress. Executive Power is exercised by the government. Legislative Power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of the National Congress which is based in Valparaiso (120km /80mi from Santiago, the Capital). The Judiciary is fully independent of the executive and the legislature.
The major challenge of this strong Presidential system is to share power with the National Congress, where nowadays, senators and deputies have little or no power to exert pressure or create new laws without the support of the executive.
