In 1858, former US representative Abraham Lincoln (then little-known outside of Illinois) ran for a US Senate seat against the Democratic incumbent, Stephen A. Douglas. They held 7 scheduled debates, one in each of the districts in which neither had already campaigned. These were held between August 21 and October 15, 1858. The response by the public was arguably meaningless, since (at that time) the Illinois legislature elected the state's senators. (This was changed by the 17th amendment in 1913.)
Lincoln, the Republican candidate, lost the election but his arguments were well-received by the audiences. He collected the transcribed texts into a book, which also became popular, leading to his nomination for President in 1860.

In debate, there is a proposition and an opposition. There is first an introduction speech and then the debate begins. First, the proposition 1st speaker speaks for 5 minutes. Then the opposition 1st speaker speaks for 5 minutes. Then the 2nd opposition speaker speaks for 5minutes and then the proposition 2nd speaker does. Then the opposition rebuttal speaks for 3 mins and then the proposition rebuttal speaks for 3 mins. The result is told by the judge at the end of the debate.

This format allows for a thorough examination of all perspectives on the topic but can sometimes lead to polarized arguments without reaching a consensus.

Both in a debate and a persuasive speech you have your side and you are presenting it in the most favorable light. Regardless of the format, you are essentially persuading in both circumstances. Your efforts are solely devoted to trying to have a person, judge, teacher, etc. see the merit in your side, so in that, when in a debate, you are persuading, and your speech is essentially the same as a persuasive speech.
Rebuttal statements are used in a debate, where the opposing side gets to respond to the arguments. Unless the format of the debate is known in advance, it is hard to have it written in advance. The great thing about debating is learning to think up quick, logical responses in a discussion.
William Lane Craig won even Yusuf Ismail had the advantage of using the "question-only" approach. I don't like the format of the debate because it obviously gave the critics of trinity a pass and gave the burden of answering to William Lane Craig.
