Ham Radio is different then regular common radio in many different aspects. First you need a license to operate on ham (amateur) radio. A license is very easy to obtain and requires you to take a multiple choice exam. There is a nominal fee and the exam is administered by a VEC (Volunteer Exam Commissioner). However, you are able to use many different types of radio communication modes. Hams enjoy satelite communications, TV and digital communication, handheld and mobile voice as well as the traditional big box on the table with tons of knobs and meters on it. Hams are also allowed to legally use significantly more transmit power than Common Radio and are given access to many more usable frequencies than Common Radio.

Ham radio is for amateur radio enthusiasts and operates in a different frequency spectrum that broadcast radio. Ham radio operators are allowed to transmit and communicate with other radio operators around the world, depending on atmospheric conditions, and their communications can be that of Morse Code, voice and even slow scan television. A license is generally required to operate a ham transmitter. receiver (commonly referred to as a `transceiver' and the transmitting power can vary. One of the favorite things ham operators will do, is try to operate on `flea-power', meaning that they try to make world wide communications links with another ham radio operator, based on as little as 100 milliwatts. That's 1/10th. of a watt of transmitting power. Then they will usually send a postcard from to each other, verifying the date, time and other conditions of their communications to each other. I believe this is commonly referred to as `DX-ing'. You can spend as little or as much as you wish on your communications equipment and many ham operators actually construct their equipment. Although I;'m not involved in ham radio, it can be an exciting and fun hobby for those involved.

Although a ham radio does broadcast in all directions, hams generally do not use their radios in a broadcast kind of way as a disk jockey would at a radio station. In normal AM or FM radio, one disk jockey transmits and thousands of people listen. Hams, on the other hand, conducttwo-way conversations, often with another ham or with a group of hams in an informal roundtable. The roundtable of hams may be in the same town, county, state, country or continent or may consist of a mix of countries, depending on the frequency and the time of the day. Hams also participate in networks, often callednets, at predetermined times and frequencies to exchange third-party messages. In the case of disasters, hams exchange health and welfare information with other hams. Some hams use radioteletype, (RTTY) with computer screens replacing the noisy teletype machines of the past.

CB radio uses a frequency of 27 MHz and 49 MHz band. A FCC permit is required but no Morse code or electronic knowledge is required. Ham radio is a FCC licensed area which requires various degrees of electronic knowledge and in some cases Morse code proficiency. CB radio (citizen band radio) is restricted to voice communication only using commercially built radios. Ham or amateur radio covers a broad range of types of communication which includes but not limited to voice, Morse code, TV, teletype etc. The equipment used can be commercially built or homemade (as long as it meets FCC approval). Unfortunately the CB radio bands have been over used and very abused by many of its users and has become a FCC nightmare. The amateur radio bands are self policed by the license holders and abusers are reported to the FCC or in many cases tracked down by the hams and shut down. Ham radio operators take their privileges very seriously and abhor those who abuse the privilege.

2. Amateur radio operators can operate on a very wide spectrum of frequencies. Other services are limited to a narrow band of frequencies.

3. Amateur radio may never be used in selling anything.

4. In amateur radio, many modes can be used: phone (voice), code, teletype, digital packet, am, fm, sideband, television, and more.

Let's talk about the difference between the CB radio and Ham radio services,

and you can decide for yourself how the individuals may differ who prefer to

operate one or the other.

-- Frequencies ("channels"):

Many different bands available for ham radio, operators may operate on any

frequency in the band.

Only one band available for CB radio, operators must operate on definite channel

frequencies.

-- Mode:

Ham operators may use Morse Code, AM voice, FM voice, single sideband voice,

video, or digital data transmission.

CB operators can only use voice transmission.

-- Equipment:

Ham operators have a choice of many available manufactured radios, with

different frequency bands, transmit power levels, modes, and prices. Hams

may modify (tinker with) the equipment they buy, and may operate with

equipment that they build on their own from scratch.

CB operators have a choice of several available manufactured radios, which

are all type-approved by the FCC. They all operate on the same frequency

band, with the same power limit and the same mode, and have different prices.

CB owners can't legally modify (tinker with) the equipment they buy, and can't

operate with equipment they've built. CB operators often take the approach

that says "Yeah, but I know how to get around that." Ham operators seldom do.

-- License:

An operator's license, awarded upon successfully passing a test on rules, regulations,

and technical subjects, is required in order to legally operate ham radio.

No license is required to operate CB radio.
