RT-1523B is the last of the earlier generation SINCGARS ICOM sets, prior to the 'System Improvement Program' (SIP) radios which offered the improved data modes necessary to help realize the 'Tactical internet' (TI). RT-1523C and RT-1523D were the full-size SIP radio models.
The RT-1523E was the first 'ASIP' model, or Advanced System Improvement Program. The RT-1523E's where half the size of the earlier models (which makes them look a bit silly in the vehicle adapter/ amp trays designed for the earlier radios), and had LCD displays vs. the earlier LED type, and other improvements which improved battery life dramatically. The RT-1523E through RT-1523G models are the currently deployed (2012) versions of SINCGARS.
