A table d'hote menu is also know as prix fixe menu. All items are set so that appetizer, soup, main with sides, salad and dessert are placed in the menu with little if no choices offered. Usually the menu starts with soup or salad, main choice (here would be a choice of fish, poultry beef or Vegetarian) with specific starch and vegetables) followed by dessert. All this is offered at a set price (prix fixe) with no surprises in cost. And of course, No substitutions!

À la carte is were you just get an entrée but table d'hôte is where you would get a salad or soup before the meal

Table d'hote means the restaurant or hotel dinning room offers three or more course for one price, and usually consists of appetizer, main course and dessert.

A la carte means you order one dish at atime: appetizer, main course and dessert and each has its own seperate charge on the bill.

Table d'hote = a menu with multiple courses, but only a few choices (e.g. 3 starters, 3 mains, 3 deserts), usually charged at a fixed price.

A La Carte = means literally 'from the card'. This is usually a menu with much more choice (15 - 20 dishes of starter/main/desert), and you don't have to have three or more courses, you can chose a main only if you want. The price is usually by the item, rather than a fixed price as with table d'hote
