In the U.S., it is considered a professional doctorate degree, just like a MD (medical doctor) or DDS (dentist) while in most of the world a legal degree is a bachelors degree. While lawyers in the U.S. may call themselves, and be called, doctors, it is considered tacky to do so (unless perhaps in an academic setting)

a juris doctor is a doctor of jurisprudence, or law. A master's degree is typically takes a few years beyond your bachelor's degree and can be in any field.

The Juris Doctor is purely a law degree. It once was an advanced law degree for people who already had a bachelors degree in law or else had passed the bar and wanted to be recognized as legal scholars. Nowadays it is usually the first law degree. It is a generally a two or three year program of course-work with no dissertation.

Master's degrees are offered in virtually every academic field, incuding applied field such as business, engineering and teaching. There is usually a thesis option and a non-thesis option in which addiitional coursework and/or exam are substituted for the expository thesis. Usually the equivalent of an undergraduate major in the field of the master's is required and the masters usually requires three semesters of fulltime coursework. Some PhD granting institutions give the Master's as a sort of "booby prize" to students who reach a certain point in the PhD program but fail to complete it.he Juris Doctor is purely a law degree.
