An inverter is used to change DC current into AC; e.g., you could plug an inverter into the cigar lighter socket of your car and then plug 110v AC-powered equipment into the inverter.

A converter would be used in international travel where the voltage and frequency of AC current needs to be converted, for us Americans, into 110v, 60 cycle. Other countries often use 50 cycle and/or 220v. Our equipment would then work on the converted power.

It's NOT a question of "better" . -They are different machines with different purposes. The inverter gets it's power from batteries, and is much used in submersibles and aircraft. A generator is powered by a gas motor and cannot be used in some locations.
